Challah French Toast

Challah French Toast
Spruce up your ordinary French toast recipe by using homemade challah bread instead. Courtesy of Shelley Sloat of The Village.
Directions for: Challah French Toast

Ingredients

Challah Bread

3 eggs

3 Tbsp vegetable oil

3 Tbsp honey

Tbsp sugar

Tbsp salt

4 cup flour

2 tsp instant yeast

sesame seeds

French Toast

2 eggs

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 orange, zested

cup milk

1 Tbsp canola oil

maple syrup, to taste

Directions

Challah Bread

1. Set oven to 325F; preheat for 5 minutes then turn oven off. Keep oven door closed to trap heat.

2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a hook attachment, mix together eggs, vegetable oil, honey, sugar, salt, and 1 cup of hot water on slow speed.

3. Mix for 1 minute, until eggs are fully incorporated.

4. Slowly add 2 cups flour and instant yeast to form dough; mix on low for an additional 5 minutes.

5. Add remaining flour and continue mixing on low for an additional 10-12 minutes or until dough is elastic and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

6. Drizzle 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil on a clean work surface; knead dough on the work surface for a few folds, or until dough is coated with oil.

7. Divide dough into six even pieces. Roll each piece into a foot-long rope about 1 inches thick.

8. Line up the ropes and pinch the top ends together.

9. Working from left to right, weave each rope through the subsequent ropes. Tuck the ends underneath to seal.

10. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray and transfer the challah to the pan. Place the dough in the warm oven to rise for 25 minutes.

11. Remove dough from oven and preheat oven to 325F.

12. While oven preheats, whisk together an egg and 1 tablespoon of water. Brush egg wash onto loaf and sprinkle liberally with sesame seeds.

13. Bake loaf for 34 minutes, or until bread is brown and crusty; remove bread from oven and set aside to cool for at least 1 hour.

French Toast

1. Preheat oven to 350F.

2. Cut challah bread into 8 (1/2-inch) slices.

3. Whisk together eggs, vanilla extract, orange zest, and milk.

4. Dip sliced challah bread into the mixture for 30 seconds per side, or until bread is soaked through.

5. Warm canola oil in a large pan over medium heat. Fry challah bread for 2 minutes, or until golden brown; flip and repeat.

6. Transfer French toast to an ungreased baking sheet and keep warm in the oven while you fry remaining French toast.

7. Serve French toast hot with maple syrup and butter.
