A recipe is merely words on paper; a guideline, a starting point from which to improvise. It cannot pretend to replace the practiced hand and telling glance of a watchful cook. For that reason, this is also an account of what happens when I make this dish, so youll understand each step. Of course when you cook it once, it becomes yours, so personalize it a bit. Add more of an ingredient you like or less of something you dont like. Try substituting one ingredient for another. Remember words have no flavour, you have to add your own!
Looking for a dessert you can prep in ten minutes or less? Here it is! Not only are these baked apples easy to prepare theyre also easy to experiment with. I like to try out different spices every time I make them. Sometimes I even personalize each one with a different aroma!
Directions for: Spice Baked Apple
Ingredients
Try making six at a time. For each apple youll need:
1 baking apple like Golden Delicious, Gala or Granny Smith
A sprinkle of a favourite spice like cinnamon, nutmeg or allspice
A spoonful of brown sugar
A small pat of butter
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F or if youre in a rush to 400 degrees F. Roll the apple on its side and cut off the top half-inch or so. Save these hats. Scoop out the middle of the apple with a small spoon. Remove all the seeds and the woody core but try not to punch through the bottom.
2. Sprinkle the middle of each apple with a light dusting of spice. Toss a spoonful of brown sugar into the center; you dont need to fill it up completely. Add a dab of butter and replace the apple hat.
3. Place the apples in a baking pan and bake until heated through and soft, about an hour. Serve with lots of vanilla ice cream!
