The traditional savoury hot dog gets transformed into a delectably sweet variation, served up with chocolate and caramel sauces, red sprinkles, ice cream and churros.
Directions for: The Dessert Dog
Ingredients
1 cup milk, warm
cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 pkg instant or active dry yeast
2 eggs, beaten
1 stick unsalted butter, melted
4 cups flour
tsp salt
Oil, for frying
4 pre-made churros
1 tub vanilla ice cream
4 cups whipped cream
Chocolate sauce, store-bought
Caramel sauce, store-bought
Red sprinkles
Directions
1. Attach a dough hook to an electric mixer. Mix together milk, sugar, and vanilla. Lightly stir in yeast. Allow it to activate for about 10 minutes.
2. On low-medium speed combine butter and eggs to the mix. Continue mixing for 5 minutes. One tablespoon at a time, add in the flour and salt. Stop the mixer and scrape down the side of the bowl. Turn to high and mix another 5 minutes.
3. Pour 1 teaspoon of oil into a bowl and grease the sides. Roll the dough into the bowl and cover with a towel. Place in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
4. Turn donut dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to be -inch in thickness. Cut the dough to be 6 inches wide by 8 inches long. This will be the hot dog bun. Repeat to make another. Cover with plastic wrap and a towel and place somewhere warm for one hour. It should double in size and look fluffy.
5. Heat the oil to 350F (175C). One at a time gently lift and place the donut into the oil, fry until golden brown. Place on a wire rack to remove any extra oil. Repeat with the second donut.
6. To assemble, place a churro in the center of the donut. Scoop three scoops of ice cream on top. Put whipped cream on top of the ice cream. Drizzle with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, and red sprinkles.
